Single Page Application

Definition

A Single Page Application (SPA) is a web application that loads a single HTML page and dynamically updates content as the user interacts, rather than requiring full page reloads from the server.

Instead of the browser requesting a completely new HTML page for every user action, an SPA loads all necessary code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) initially. Subsequent interactions, such as clicking a link or button, trigger JavaScript to update only the specific parts of the page that have changed. Data is typically fetched from the server using APIs without a full page refresh, leading to a fluid and responsive user experience.

For instance, when a user navigates between different email folders in a webmail application built as an SPA, only the content pane updates while the rest of the interface remains constant. This architecture is widely adopted in modern web development for creating highly interactive web experiences such as social media platforms, online mapping services, and productivity dashboards.
