A 28-year-old man, identified as Ankit, was successfully rescued from the Yamuna River in Delhi on Thursday morning, June 13, 2024, after he reportedly jumped in near the Signature Bridge. The incident occurred following the loss of his iPhone and significant financial distress related to its Equated Monthly Installments (EMI). This event follows a separate, unrelated tragedy earlier this month in Maharashtra.

Eyewitnesses at the scene observed Ankit jumping into the river around 10:00 AM. Prompt and coordinated action by passersby, coupled with the swift assistance of local fishermen, ensured his rapid extraction from the water. A Police Control Room (PCR) call was immediately placed, reporting the incident. Police personnel from the New Usmanpur police station promptly arrived at the location to manage the situation and provide assistance. Following his rescue, Ankit was taken for a medical examination to assess his physical condition.

Initial accounts from the scene indicate that Ankit expressed profound distress over the disappearance of his mobile device. He reportedly conveyed to both his rescuers and the arriving police officers that the substantial financial commitment of the iPhone’s EMIs had become an unbearable burden, contributing directly to his decision. This personal account underscores the considerable financial pressures some individuals face in managing consumer debt, particularly for high-value electronics.

The incident in Delhi occurs against the backdrop of another recent technology-related tragedy reported in Maharashtra. Earlier in June, a 32-year-old man named S K Mote tragically fell into a deep gorge near Lonavala, leading to his death. Mote was reportedly engaged in a video call at the time the accident occurred. While the circumstances and motivations of the Delhi and Maharashtra incidents are distinct, both have drawn public attention due to their recent occurrence and incidental connection to mobile devices.

Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the full circumstances surrounding Ankit’s actions in Delhi. His current medical status has not been publicly detailed beyond the confirmation of his rescue and subsequent medical assessment. According to reports, police are providing counseling to Ankit and offering assistance to address the financial challenges he has reportedly faced.
