Apple Unveils M4 Chip and Thinnest iPad Pro, Bolstering On-Device AI Capabilities
Apple Inc. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, announced its latest generation of iPad Pro models, featuring the newly introduced M4 system-on-a-chip. The announcement, made during a virtual "Let Loose" event, highlighted the M4 chip's advanced capabilities for artificial intelligence tasks and its role in powering the company's thinnest product to date. This launch positions the iPad Pro as a central device for on-device AI applications and high-performance mobile computing.
The M4 chip represents a significant advancement, built on second-generation 3-nanometer technology. Apple states the M4 integrates a new display engine to power the iPad Pro's Ultra Retina XDR screen, alongside a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. The most notable feature of the M4 is its enhanced 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple claims is capable of performing up to 38 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This makes the M4's Neural Engine faster than any neural processing unit in current AI PCs, according to the company. The design emphasis on AI processing indicates Apple’s strategy to integrate more machine learning functionalities directly onto its devices, reducing reliance on cloud-based solutions for certain tasks.
The updated iPad Pro models themselves feature a significantly redesigned enclosure.
- Thinness: The 11-inch model measures 5.3mm thin, while the 13-inch model is 5.1mm thick, making the latter the thinnest Apple product ever manufactured. This new design is achieved without compromising structural integrity or thermal performance, according to Apple engineers.
- Display Technology: Both models introduce a new "Tandem OLED" display, branded as "Ultra Retina XDR." This technology layers two OLED panels to achieve higher brightness levels, offering up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness and 1,600 nits of peak brightness for HDR content. This aims to provide enhanced visual fidelity for professional users working with high-dynamic-range content.
- Accessories: Alongside the new iPads, Apple also unveiled an updated Apple Pencil Pro, which includes new gestures such as a squeeze function to bring up a tool palette and haptic feedback for a more intuitive user experience. A redesigned Magic Keyboard was also introduced, featuring a function row and a larger trackpad.
Pricing for the new 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $999 for the Wi-Fi model, with the 13-inch model starting at $1,299. Pre-orders commenced immediately following the announcement, with devices expected to begin shipping to customers in the coming week. The inclusion of the M4 chip bypasses the M3 generation used in recent MacBook Air and Pro models, suggesting a dedicated focus on the iPad Pro as a leading platform for Apple's AI initiatives. This release is expected to influence the competitive landscape in the premium tablet market, particularly for users requiring powerful on-device processing for creative and professional applications.
