Congress Party Sees Notable Wins for Muslim Candidates in Recent and Past Elections
The Congress party has secured a notable number of electoral victories for its Muslim candidates, both in the recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections and in a series of state assembly contests over recent years. This trend signifies an increased representation of Muslim leaders within the party's elected members in Parliament and state legislatures.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, results for which were declared on June 4, the Congress party saw seven of its Muslim candidates elected to the 18th Lok Sabha. This marks an increase from the four Muslim Members of Parliament (MPs) the party secured in the 2019 general elections. Overall, 24 Muslim MPs were elected to the 543-member Lok Sabha, with the INDIA bloc, of which Congress is a key constituent, contributing nine Muslim MPs. Congress had fielded 13 Muslim candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Notable wins for Congress Muslim candidates in the Lok Sabha include Rakibul Hussain, who secured the Dhubri seat in Assam with the highest victory margin in the country, exceeding 10.12 lakh votes. Shafi Parambhil won the Palakkad constituency in Kerala. In Assam, a total of three of the seven Muslim MPs elected on a Congress ticket emerged victorious from the state’s Dhubri, Karimganj, and Nagaon seats. Additionally, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi, who serves in the Rajya Sabha, was re-elected for another term, further bolstering the party's Muslim representation in Parliament.
Beyond the national elections, a review of recent state assembly polls reveals a consistent pattern of Congress Muslim candidates achieving significant success:
- Telangana Assembly Elections (2023): Out of eight Muslim candidates fielded by Congress, six were elected as Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
- Karnataka Assembly Elections (2023): Seven out of 15 Muslim candidates nominated by the party secured victories.
- Rajasthan Assembly Elections (2023): Two out of three Muslim candidates from Congress won their respective seats.
- Uttar Pradesh Assembly By-elections (2022): Congress saw two Muslim MLAs, Imran Masood (Nakur) and Khalid Rashid (Loni), elected in bye-elections, demonstrating electoral viability in a challenging political landscape.
- Bihar Assembly Elections (2020): Five out of ten Muslim candidates fielded by Congress emerged victorious.
- Maharashtra Assembly Elections (2019): Three out of five Muslim candidates from the Congress party won their constituencies.
- West Bengal Assembly Elections (2021): One out of four Muslim candidates contested on a Congress ticket won a seat.
Historically, Muslim representation in the Lok Sabha has fluctuated, peaking at 49 MPs in 1980. The 2014 Lok Sabha elections saw 23 Muslim MPs, followed by 26 in 2019. The current count of 24 Muslim MPs in the 18th Lok Sabha, alongside the specific gains made by the Congress party in both parliamentary and state legislative bodies, indicates a significant shift in the electoral presence of Muslim candidates within the party's ranks. This series of outcomes reflects the varied regional dynamics and voter preferences that shaped the recent electoral contests across India.
