The twin tunnels hold substantial strategic importance, particularly for improving accessibility and logistics for defense movements towards Arunachal Pradesh and Tawang, regions that share borders with neighboring countries. The project's primary objective is to provide all-weather, all-time connectivity, circumventing the existing geographical challenges posed by the mighty Brahmaputra River, which often disrupts travel during monsoon seasons or high-water periods. Upon completion, the project is projected to significantly reduce travel times, cutting railway journey durations by an estimated 10 hours and road travel by approximately three hours between the two banks.
