India-Australia Trade Deal Expected to Boost Agricultural Sector, Says Then CM Chouhan
Bhopal, India – Then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, stated in October 2022 that the newly concluded India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) was poised to significantly benefit Indian farmers. Chouhan remarked that the deal would "give new wings to farmers' dreams," emphasizing its potential to enhance market access and increase agricultural exports from India. His comments highlighted the central government's efforts to open new avenues for the country's agricultural produce.
The India-Australia ECTA, signed in April 2022 and brought into force in December 2022, aims to reduce tariffs on a wide range of goods and services exchanged between the two nations. For India's agricultural sector, proponents of the agreement anticipate increased opportunities for products to reach the Australian market with reduced trade barriers. This is expected to translate into higher demand and potentially better prices for Indian farmers, thereby improving their economic outlook.
The agreement focuses on several key areas designed to facilitate trade and economic cooperation:
- Tariff Reductions: Australia committed to eliminating tariffs on 100% of its tariff lines, impacting approximately 96.4% of India's exports by value. This includes several agricultural products.
- Market Access: Indian agricultural products, including certain fruits, vegetables, and processed food items, are expected to gain easier entry into the Australian market.
- Rules of Origin: The ECTA establishes rules of origin to ensure that only goods primarily processed in India or Australia benefit from the preferential tariff rates.
- Sectors Benefiting: Beyond agriculture, sectors such as textiles, leather, footwear, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, and pharmaceuticals are also slated for tariff elimination or reduction.
Chouhan’s statement underscored the strategic importance of such bilateral agreements in diversifying export markets and reducing reliance on traditional trade routes. He noted that the ECTA aligns with broader national policies aimed at doubling farmers' income by providing them with global market exposure and fostering value addition in the agricultural supply chain. The Madhya Pradesh government, under his leadership, had indicated readiness to facilitate farmers in leveraging these new opportunities through awareness campaigns and logistical support.
As the ECTA continues to be implemented, its long-term impact on India's agricultural sector and farmer incomes will be a subject of ongoing evaluation by both government bodies and industry analysts. The agreement represents a significant step in India's broader trade policy, aiming to integrate its economy more closely with key global partners and generate tangible benefits for its primary producers.
