India Intensifies Efforts to Become Global Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub
The Government of India is significantly escalating its efforts to establish the nation as a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, attracting substantial investments and initiating key projects. This strategic push, underpinned by a comprehensive incentive framework, aims to integrate India into the global semiconductor supply chain and enhance its technological self-reliance. The initiative represents a pivotal moment in India's industrial policy, seeking to capitalize on increasing geopolitical focus on resilient supply chains.
The national drive for semiconductor independence and export capability comes amidst global supply chain vulnerabilities highlighted in recent years. India's strategy seeks to mitigate reliance on concentrated manufacturing regions and foster domestic capabilities, projecting long-term economic growth and job creation. The global semiconductor market, valued at over $500 billion, presents a substantial opportunity for new entrants capable of meeting stringent manufacturing demands.

India Semiconductor Mission (ISM): Launched in December 2021 with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore (approximately $10 billion), the ISM provides financial incentives for companies establishing semiconductor and display fabrication units, as well as compound semiconductors, silicon photonics, and ATMP/OSAT facilities. The scheme offers various levels of capital expenditure support, including 50% for display and semiconductor fabs and 30% for ATMP/OSAT units.

Micron Technology Investment: In June 2023, U.S.-based Micron Technology announced plans to build a new semiconductor assembly and test (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The total investment for the project is projected at $2.75 billion, with Micron's contribution of $825 million and the remaining support from the central and state governments. The facility is anticipated to create 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs over the next five years, with phased production expected to commence by late 2024.
