The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently released video footage showcasing its S-400 Triumf long-range air defence missile system. The public debut of the system in action was featured as part of preparations for the IAF's VayuShakti-2024 exercise, a large-scale demonstration of air power scheduled for February 17, 2024, at Pokhran, Rajasthan. The S-400 Triumf, known by NATO as SA-21 Growler, is a mobile, surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by Russia's Almaz-Antey. Its capabilities include tracking and engaging a variety of aerial threats such as aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The system is designed to provide comprehensive air defence coverage, offering protection over significant geographical areas. Its public display underscores India's ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen its national defence infrastructure.

India entered into an agreement with Russia in October 2018 for the acquisition of five S-400 air defence missile systems, valued at approximately $5.43 billion. The procurement has been a cornerstone of India's strategic defence planning, aimed at enhancing its capabilities against potential aerial threats across its borders. Deliveries of the system commenced in December 2021, and multiple units have since been integrated into India's operational readiness. According to defence reports, at least three of the five contracted systems have been delivered and are reportedly operational in India's northern and eastern sectors.
