Indian Navy's Stealth Frigate INS Taragiri Set for April 3 Commissioning
The Indian Navy is scheduled to commission its latest stealth frigate, INS Taragiri, on April 3, 2024. The ceremony, set to take place in Mumbai, marks a notable expansion of the nation's naval fleet and represents the third ship to be inducted under the ambitious Project 17A frigate program. Constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), INS Taragiri is designed to bolster India's maritime defence capabilities through its advanced stealth features, speed, and integrated combat systems.
Project 17A is an initiative by the Ministry of Defence aimed at building a class of advanced stealth frigates, which are follow-on ships to the Shivalik-class (Project 17) frigates. This program significantly emphasizes indigenous design and manufacturing, with a substantial percentage of the equipment and systems sourced from Indian companies. This aligns with the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) vision, bolstering the domestic defence industrial base. The project encompasses a total of seven ships, with four being built by MDL in Mumbai and three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. The construction of these frigates employs an Integrated Construction Methodology, which involves manufacturing blocks in different geographical locations before final assembly at the main shipyard, aiming to reduce construction time and improve quality.
INS Taragiri, named after a mountain peak in the Himalayas, was launched on September 11, 2022. The vessel incorporates cutting-edge stealth features, including a radar-transparent deck and hull structures, and advanced radar cross-section reduction techniques, designed to minimize its detectability by enemy radar systems. Its propulsion system is configured for high speed and maneuverability, allowing for rapid deployment across various operational zones. With an approximate displacement of 6,670 tonnes and a length of 149 meters, the frigate is capable of speeds exceeding 28 knots.
The frigate is designed to accommodate a formidable suite of modern weaponry and sensors. It will be equipped with advanced weapon systems for air defence, anti-ship, and anti-submarine warfare, including an array of missiles, torpedoes, and naval guns. These are integrated with sophisticated radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems, enabling the ship to detect, track, and engage multiple threats simultaneously. The expected operational deployment of INS Taragiri will significantly bolster the capabilities of the Western Naval Command, contributing to diverse maritime operations such as anti-piracy patrols, coastal surveillance, and the protection of India's extensive maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region.
The commissioning of INS Taragiri underscores India's ongoing commitment to modernizing its naval forces and strengthening its strategic presence in the Indo-Pacific. With the remaining ships of Project 17A progressing towards completion and future inductions, the Indian Navy is systematically expanding its fleet to address evolving regional security challenges. This sustained naval expansion is vital for maintaining maritime security, safeguarding critical sea lanes, and projecting India's role as a responsible and capable naval power.
