Fifteen Indian seafarers from the abandoned merchant vessel MV SSL URJA have been successfully repatriated to India, concluding a harrowing 14-month ordeal off the coast of Iran. The crew members, who faced acute shortages of provisions, fuel, and unpaid wages, arrived in Mumbai in late December 2024, bringing an end to their prolonged maritime distress.

The vessel, managed by Shreyas Shipping & Logistics Ltd, a subsidiary of the Transworld Group, had been anchored off the Iranian coast since October 2023 after experiencing operational issues and eventual abandonment. During their time stranded, the seafarers reported significant hardships, including a complete lack of wages for over 14 months, intermittent power failures due to fuel shortages, and dwindling supplies of food and fresh water.

One of the repatriated crew members, Chief Officer Manoj Rawat, described the experience as a "harrowing time," highlighting the immense mental and physical strain endured by those on board. Conditions deteriorated to a critical point where basic necessities were scarce, leading to health concerns among the crew. In an earlier instance, Captain Sanjay Parmar suffered a heart attack and was medically repatriated following an urgent intervention.

The repatriation effort was a collaborative initiative involving several Indian government bodies and international organizations. Key facilitators included:

  • Directorate General of Shipping (DGS): Played a crucial role in coordinating the logistical aspects of the crew's return.
  • Ministry of External Affairs (MEA): Provided diplomatic support and facilitated communication with Iranian authorities.
  • Indian Consulate in Bandar Abbas, Iran: Offered on-ground assistance and support to the stranded seafarers.
  • International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF): Advocated for the crew's welfare and rights, contributing to the pressure for their repatriation.

Upon their arrival in Mumbai, the seafarers underwent necessary health checks and were provided with immediate support services. The successful repatriation underscores the complexities of international maritime law and the vulnerability of seafarers to abandonment by vessel operators. While the crew members have returned home, the MV SSL URJA remains anchored off the Iranian coast, its future status and the resolution of outstanding issues regarding its ownership and the crew's unpaid wages are yet to be fully determined.
