Jaish-e-Mohammed Bahawalpur Facility Reportedly Operational Again Following Reconstruction
Reports from intelligence sources indicate that the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror facility located in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, known as Markaz-e-Usman-o-Ali, has reportedly become fully operational again. This development follows its extensive damage during Indian airstrikes in February 2019, referred to by some as "Operation Sindoor." These new assessments suggest the facility has undergone significant reconstruction and is actively involved in recruitment and training activities.
The Markaz-e-Usman-o-Ali compound, situated in Bahawalpur, has historically served as a central hub for JeM operations. It was among the targets of India's pre-emptive strikes on February 26, 2019, which were conducted in response to the Pulwama terror attack earlier that month. At the time, Indian officials stated the strikes had significantly degraded JeM's capabilities and infrastructure in the region. However, recent intelligence assessments challenge this long-term impact, indicating a resurgence of activities at the site.
According to intelligence reports, the reconstruction and renewed operational status of the Bahawalpur facility were allegedly facilitated by financial support from the Pakistani government. These reports claim that approximately Rs 8 crore (equivalent to approximately $950,000 USD at current exchange rates) was allocated to JeM for the purpose of rebuilding the compound and resuming its activities. The funding is reported to have enabled extensive fortification of the facility, allowing it to once again function at full capacity for its stated objectives.
The facility's reported resurgence includes the active recruitment of new operatives and the provision of terror training and ideological indoctrination. Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist organization, is designated as a global terrorist entity by the United Nations. Its chief, Masood Azhar, remains in Pakistan, a point of long-standing concern for international counter-terrorism efforts and regional security.
The re-establishment of the Markaz-e-Usman-o-Ali facility in Bahawalpur, as reported by intelligence sources, raises significant concerns regarding regional stability and international counter-terrorism efforts. The alleged state sponsorship for a proscribed terrorist organization’s infrastructure could complicate diplomatic relations and global initiatives aimed at combating terrorism. Observers will monitor further developments and official responses to these intelligence reports.
