Pradyut Bordoloi Joins BJP, Assam CM Hints at Election Recommendation
GUWAHATI, ASSAM – Former Member of Parliament Pradyut Bordoloi formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam on February 23, 2024. The defection occurred at an event in Guwahati attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who subsequently indicated that Bordoloi would be recommended for upcoming elections, though a specific constituency has yet to be determined.
Bordoloi's entry into the ruling party represents a significant political shift within Assam, particularly ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The move is expected to bolster the BJP's organizational strength and electoral prospects in the state, leveraging Bordoloi's established political presence and experience.
Pradyut Bordoloi has a notable political career, having previously represented the Nagaon constituency in the Lok Sabha as a member of the Indian National Congress. Prior to his tenure as an MP, he served as a minister in various Congress-led state governments in Assam, holding portfolios such as Industries and Commerce. His transition to the BJP marks a departure from a long-standing association with the Congress party.
During the joining ceremony, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Bordoloi to the party fold. Sarma's statement, "We will recommend him for elections. Where he will contest is not decided yet," provided a direct indication of Bordoloi's potential role in the BJP's electoral strategy. The Chief Minister also highlighted Bordoloi's experience and public recognition as assets for the BJP.
This political realignment takes place as parties across India prepare for the general elections, anticipated to be held in April-May 2024. The BJP has been actively working to consolidate its position across the northeastern states, and the induction of prominent figures like Bordoloi is viewed as a strategic maneuver to achieve this objective. The move simultaneously represents a setback for the Congress party in Assam, which has witnessed several of its key leaders join the BJP in recent years.
The BJP's central election committee is expected to finalize its list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in the coming weeks. Bordoloi's specific constituency and responsibilities within the BJP's campaign are anticipated to be clarified as the electoral process progresses. The defection is likely to generate further political discourse and potential strategic adjustments among political parties within Assam's dynamic political landscape.
