Jammu and Kashmir’s State Investigation Agency (SIA) has secured an Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terrorist Basit Ahmed Reshi. The RCN was issued in connection with his alleged involvement as the mastermind and main executor of a terror attack in Tarzoo, Sopore, Baramulla district, on November 18, 2013. The incident resulted in the deaths of two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and two civilians.

The issuance of an Interpol Red Corner Notice represents an international request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action. This development significantly broadens the scope of the search for Reshi, who is believed to have fled to Pakistan following the attack. The RCN serves as a critical tool for global cooperation in apprehending individuals wanted for serious crimes.

The 2013 terror attack in Tarzoo, Sopore, was a significant security incident. The assault specifically targeted security forces, resulting in the fatalities of two CRPF personnel. Additionally, two civilians lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries during the assault. Investigations subsequently identified Basit Ahmed Reshi as a key figure in the planning and execution of this act of terror.

Basit Ahmed Reshi is identified as a member of the proscribed terrorist organization Hizbul Mujahideen. Following the 2013 attack, initial investigations implicated him, leading to persistent efforts by law enforcement agencies to apprehend him. The Jammu and Kashmir SIA, established to streamline and enhance terror-related investigations in the region, took over the case. The agency meticulously compiled evidence and fulfilled the procedural requirements necessary for international cooperation, culminating in the successful application for the Interpol RCN. The charges against Reshi include murder, criminal conspiracy, and relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

With the Interpol RCN now active, all 196 member countries of Interpol are alerted to Reshi's status as a wanted individual. This significantly increases the likelihood of his detection and apprehension should he attempt to reside in or transit through any of these nations. The RCN facilitates the extradition process to allow Reshi to face charges in India, underscoring the ongoing efforts by Indian law enforcement to pursue individuals involved in terrorism across international borders.
