On Monday, May 27, 2024, sixteen construction workers were successfully rescued after being trapped inside the Barkot-Dandalkhal tunnel in Uttarakhand due to a sudden and significant inflow of water. The incident occurred following heavy overnight rainfall, which inundated a section of the under-construction tunnel, part of the strategic Chardham all-weather road project.

The workers became stranded in the early morning hours when water rapidly filled a portion of the tunnel, blocking their exit. Authorities were alerted swiftly, initiating a coordinated rescue operation involving multiple state and national agencies. The incident underscored the inherent challenges of infrastructure development in mountainous regions, particularly concerning geological instability and weather-related risks.
