Ranchi, Jharkhand – Hundreds of students converged in the state capital on Thursday, October 26, 2023, demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Protesters, chanting slogans such as "'Soren unfit to hold office'," cited alleged irregularities in recent state government recruitment examinations and persistently high youth unemployment figures as primary reasons for their widespread agitation.

The demonstration, organized by a coalition of student bodies including the Jharkhand Yuva Morcha (JYM) and the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) campus units, began near Morabadi Ground. Participants then attempted to march towards the Chief Minister’s official residence, approximately two kilometers away. Security forces had erected multiple barricades along the planned route, effectively preventing the students from advancing further into the high-security zone. Eyewitnesses reported a significant police presence, with water cannons positioned as a precautionary measure, though they were not deployed.

The students' core grievance centers on a perceived lack of transparency and alleged corruption within the state's public sector recruitment processes. Recent examinations for various government posts, particularly those conducted by the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), have faced accusations of question paper leaks and unfair selection practices. Student leaders stated that these incidents have severely eroded trust in the state administration and jeopardized the futures of thousands of deserving candidates. They also highlighted the state's unemployment rate, which, according to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), stood at an estimated 17.5% in September, notably higher than the national average.

Key demands articulated by the protesting student groups included:

  • A comprehensive judicial inquiry into all alleged irregularities concerning recent state government recruitment examinations.
  • The immediate re-conduct of all examinations where question paper leaks or other malpractices have been confirmed.
  • Implementation of stricter anti-cheating laws and robust mechanisms to ensure the integrity of future examination processes.
  • Expedited release of a clear roadmap for addressing youth unemployment across the state.

During the demonstration, several student leaders attempted to negotiate with district administration officials but stated that their demands were not adequately addressed. The protest led to significant traffic disruptions in parts of Ranchi for several hours.

As of Thursday evening, reports indicated that several student leaders and a number of participants were briefly detained by authorities following attempts to breach police barricades. However, official confirmation regarding the exact number of detentions and their subsequent release was pending. The Chief Minister's Office had not issued an immediate official statement regarding the protests. Representatives of the student organizations have publicly vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met, signaling the potential for further demonstrations in the coming weeks and escalating political pressure on the Soren administration concerning governance and youth employment policies.
