The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced the completion of over one crore (10 million) mandatory biometric updates for children across India. This milestone was achieved as part of an ongoing nationwide drive aimed at ensuring the accuracy and validity of Aadhaar details for minors aged between 0 and 18 years. The updates are crucial for maintaining current identity records as children grow and their unique biometrics change.

These biometric updates are a mandatory requirement for children holding a 'Baal Aadhaar,' the blue-colored Aadhaar card issued to children below five years of age. Unlike adult Aadhaar, Baal Aadhaar does not initially include biometric data such as fingerprints or iris scans, relying only on a facial photograph and demographic information linked to a parent or guardian's Aadhaar. To ensure the authenticity and continued utility of the Aadhaar number, updates are required at two specific age milestones: five years and fifteen years.

Upon a child reaching the age of five, their first set of biometrics, including ten fingerprints, iris scans, and a facial photograph, must be captured and linked to their Aadhaar number. A similar, subsequent update is required when the child turns fifteen, to re-capture updated biometrics that reflect their adolescent growth. These updates are provided free of charge by the UIDAI to all residents, emphasizing accessibility for families. The completion of over 1 crore updates signifies a significant push in ensuring these crucial records are kept current.

The importance of these updates extends to enabling children's access to various government-run welfare schemes and services. An updated Aadhaar ensures seamless verification for school admissions, scholarship applications, benefits under the Public Distribution System (PDS), and other critical services where Aadhaar is utilized as a primary identity document.
